Doors Sticking This Fall? Here’s What to Check
Have a door that opened perfectly all summer but now rubs against the frame? You’re not alone. As the seasons change here in the Pacific Northwest, changes in humidity can cause wood doors and frames to expand or shrink. Even a small change can make a door stick, scrape, or become difficult to latch.
Before you start sanding the edge, it’s worth finding out what’s actually causing the problem.
Start with the hinges
Loose hinge screws can let a door sag and rub against the frame. Check that the hinges are secure, and gently tighten any loose screws without overtightening. If a screw spins without tightening, the screw hole may need repair.
An uneven gap around the door can also point to a hinge or alignment issue. Correcting that alignment often solves the problem without removing any material.
Find where the door is rubbing
Slowly open and close the door, looking for contact points or worn paint. Is it catching at the top corner, rubbing along the side, or closing smoothly but refusing to latch?
Each symptom calls for a different adjustment. A latch that misses the strike plate may need an alignment correction, while a swollen door edge may need a different approach.
Be cautious with sanding and planing
Removing wood can help when a door truly needs more clearance, but taking off too much during a damp season can leave an oversized gap when the wood dries out. Check the hinges and alignment first. If trimming is needed, remove only what’s necessary and reseal any exposed wood.
For exterior doors, check weatherstripping and signs of moisture intrusion too. A good adjustment should preserve both smooth operation and a proper seal.
